OFFICE HOURS

  • What are their regular office hours?
  • Are the regular hours compatible with your schedule?
  • Are they open on Saturdays?
  • Who covers the practice when the doctor is unavailable?

PROFESSIONAL STAFF

  • How are routine telephone calls handled?
  • Can you request an appointment with a specific veterinarian?
  • Do you feel comfortable talking with the doctor?

FEES AND PAYMENT

  • What methods of payment are accepted?
  • Is immediate payment expected on the day of visit or are credit plans available?

SERVICES

  • What are the range of services that the veterinary hospital provides?
  • What kind of anesthetic monitoring is done?
  • Are intravenous catheters placed for most anesthetic procedures?
  • Are in-house laboratory services available?
  • Is a heated oxygen cage available? 

EMERGENCY CARE

  • How are emergency calls handled during regular office hours and after regular office hours?
  • Are you able to call and speak with a doctor about concerns after hours?

FACILITY

  • Is the practice clean and orderly?
  • Are there any unpleasant odors?
  • Is the staff friendly?
  • Are they willing, or even eager, to give you a tour?
  • Do they use digital or film based x-rays?

PROFESSIONAL AFFILIATIONS

  • Are the doctors members of professional veterinary associations?

POLICIES

  • Are you allowed to accompany your pet through all phases of care?
  • Are you allowed to watch your pet's surgery?
  • Are you allowed to be with your pet during recovery from anesthesia?
  • Are there other policies you should be aware of?
